For example, many properties in Edinburgh have mortice locks in their doors called a ‘Chubb detainer‘. To the untrained eye these may seem like a standard mortice lock. However, they are quite a bit larger than your average mortice lock. Therefor installing a normal mortice lock in its place would not work, The existing hole would be too large.
The main issue with replacing these type of locks is the price. Some shops are selling Chubb detainer locks for as much as £180!
To put things in to perspective, a normal British standard mortice lock costs around £35.

This is where we can save the customer money. Instead of replacing the whole lock, we can open up an old lock and change whatever is broken inside.
The broken part in a Chubb detainer is usually the lever pack: the part of the lock that lifts, and allows the bolt pass open when the key is turned.
A replacement lever pack for a Chubb detainer costs around £20, and the cost for labour would be around £50. Therefor the total cost to repair the lock would be £70.
This may seem a lot of money, but if you consider the alternative of buying the new lock for £180, and paying a locksmith £50 to install it. You can see that repairing the lock is far more cost effective.
